Photo Dynamic Therapy Santa Ana & San Clemente
Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) or ALA (Levulan) is a treatment for the targeted destruction of abnormal cells from acne, actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous cells) and superficial skin cancer.
Photo Dynamic Therapy for Acne is used to treat mild to moderate cystic acne. A relatively new procedure, Photodynamic Therapy (commonly referred to as PDT), combines light and a special light-activated solution that targets and destroys acne activity. Acne treatment using ALA or levulan reduces skin oiliness and minimizes the appearance of pore size. The entire skin texture improves following a Photodynamic Acne Treatment.
Photodynamic Acne Treatment (PDT) is a process by which a photosensitizing agent Levulan also referred to as ALA is applied to your skin and is absorbed by the abnormal cells of acne and actinic keratosis.
Levulan or ALA is a topical solution that is activated by a specific wavelength of light. Levulan has been used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions and is the chosen topical agent for PDT due to its effectiveness.
PDT Acne Treatment provides a viable alternative to all types of acne treatment without having negative systemic effects.
In the past the best treatment option available for resistant and cystic acne was Accutane. However, with Accutane there are many systemic* side effects. The use of Accutane is highly regulated and patients choosing the treatment must follow rigorous monitoring under a government set of regulations called I Pledge.
Levulan or ALA is applied to your skin and left on for 30-60 minutes. It is then activated with a specific laser wavelength which Dr. Roham determines is most effective for your problem level.
The Levulan or ALA is absorbed by abnormally active cells of acne making the targeted acne cells more sensitive to the process. This combined interaction of the topical solution and the light is what gives rise to the term “photodynamic therapy.”
When the light is turned on, the Levulan creates a reaction in which the acne cells are destroyed and the sebaceous gland activity is reduced to a more normal level.
The skin appears refreshed and younger following these treatments. We suggest 2-3 treatments to obtain optimal results.
In treatment for superficial skin cancer and actinic keratosis is used in a similar fashion to the acne treatment. The targeted lesion in this case is the precancerous cells. The Levulan stimulates the immune system to start attacking and removing these abnormal cells.
Expected Side Effects
The most common and expected side effects from PDT or Levulan are; skin redness, itching and peeling (and crusting if you have superficial skin cancers) for several days after the treatment. You will need to stay indoors the day following your treatment to avoid sun exposure, as you are photosensitive for about 48 hours after PDT. Sunscreen will not protect your skin from further reaction during this time.
